He (tried, imported, attempted, attenuated) to warn them, but they didn't take him seriously./0
He tried ( attempted) to warn them, but they didn't take him seriously./0

Please read the following passage which is taken from the book More Tales from Shakespeare and answer the questions based on what is stated or implied in it
/0

Leontes, King of Sicily, and his queen, the lovely Hermione, once lived together in the greatest happiness. The love that they felt for each other made Leontes so happy that he had nothing left to wish for, except that he sometimes desired to see again his old companion and school friend, Polixenes, King of Bohemia, and to introduce his friend to his queen./1

Leontes and Polixenes had been brought up together as children, but after the deaths of their fathers, each one had to rule his own kingdom. So they had not met for many years, though they often exchanged gifts, letters and loving messages./2

At last, after repeated invitations, Polixenes came from Bohemia to the Sicilian court to pay his friend Leontes a visit. At first this visit gave nothing but pleasure to Leontes. He begged the queen to show special care and attention to his dear friend and he seemed to have found perfect happiness now that he was with his old companion. They talked about old times; they remembered their schooldays and their youthful games. They told stories of these to Hermione, who always took a cheerful part in these conversations./3

a. Why was Leontes initially so happy?/4

b. Did Leontes and Polixenes stay in touch in the years before they met as adults?/5

c. Who is the bolded ‘he’ in the third paragraph referring to?/6

And here’s how the tale continues:/0
When , after a long stay, Polixenes was preparing to leave, Hermione , at her husband's wish, begged him to make his visit longer./0

And now this good queen's sorrow began. Polixenes had refused to stay when Leontes asked him, but Hermione's gentle words persuaded him to do so. Leontes had no reason at all to doubt either the honesty of his friend Polixenes or the excellent character of his good queen, but he was immediately seized with an uncontrollable jealousy. Everything that Hermione did for Polixenes, although it was only done to please her husband, increased the unfortunate king's jealousy. Suddenly, Leontes changed from a true friend, and the best and most loving of husbands, into a wild and cruel creature. He sent for Camillo , one of the lords of his court, and told him of his suspicions about his wife's unfaithfulness. Then he ordered Camillo to poison Polixenes./0

Camillo was a good man, who knew that there was no truth in Leontes' suspicions. So, instead of poisoning Polixenes, he told him about his master's orders and agreed to escape with him from Sicily. Polixenes, with Camillo's help, arrived safely in his own kingdom of Bohemia. From that time, Camillo lived in the king's court and became his chief friend and adviser./0

a.The word gentle is closest in meaning to … ./0

I.acrimonious
II.sedating
III.soft
IV.polite

b.Why did Hermione show so much kindness to Polixenes?/0
c.Why did Leontes plot to kill Polixenes?/0
d.Why did Camillo help Polixenes escape?/0

As I promised earlier, we will be reading another passage from the book More Tales from Shakespeare by Marcia Williams
smile.gif
. I have attached the PDF version of the text. Please answer the questions based on what is stated or implied in the passage. I have made all the questions myself. /0

The escape of Polixenes made the jealous Leontes even more
angry. He went to the queen's rooms, where her little son
Mamillius was just beginning to tell his mother one of his best
stories to amuse her. Taking the child away, the king sent
Hermione to prison./0
Though Mamillius was only a very young child, he loved his
mother dearly. When he saw her treated so badly and realized that
she had been taken away from him, he became very unhappy.
Gradually he lost his desire to eat and sleep, until it was thought
that his sadness would kill him.
When the king had sent his queen to prison, he commanded
Cleomenes and Dion, two Sicilian lords, to go to Delphos and
ask the oracle at the temple of Apollo if his queen had been
unfaithful to him./0
After Hermione had been in prison for a short time, she gave
birth to a daughter. The poor lady was comforted by the sight of
her pretty baby, and she said to it: "My poor little prisoner, I have
done as little wrong as you have."/0
Hermione had a kind friend, Paulina, who was the wife of
Antigonus, another Sicilian lord. When Paulina heard that the
queen had given birth to a child, she went to the prison where
Hermione was kept and said to Emilia, a lady who served
Hermione,'I pray you, Emilia, tell the good queen that if she will
trust me with her baby, I will carry it to the king, its father. His
heart may soften when he sees his little child.'/0
'My lady,' replied Emilia, 'I will tell the queen of your offer.
She was wishing today that she had a friend who would dare to
show the child to the king.'/0
'And tell her,' said Paulina, 'that I will speak to Leontes in her
defense.'/0
'May God reward you,' said Emilia, 'for your kindness to our
gentle queen!'/0
Emilia then went to Hermione, who joyfully gave her baby
into Paulina's care./0
Paulina took the child and forced her way into the presence
of the king, although her husband, Antigonus, who feared the
king's anger, tried to prevent her. She laid the baby at its father's
feet, and made a noble speech to the king in defense of
Hermione. She criticized him for his cruelty and begged him to
have pity on his wife and child, who had done no wrong. But
Paulina's words only increased Leontes' anger, and he ordered
Antigonus to take her away./0
When Paulina went away, she left the little baby at its father's
feet. She thought that when he was alone with it, he would look
at it and feel pity for it./0
The good Paulina was wrong. As soon as she left, the cruel
father ordered Antigonus to take the child out to sea and leave it
on some empty shore to die./0

a. The word ‘him’ in line 8 refers to
I. Leontes
II. Polixenes
III.Mamillius
IV. Antigonus

b. The word ‘poor’ in line 16 is closest in meaning to
I. pathetic
II. weak
III. indigent
IV. indigenous

c. Did Antigonus approve of his wife taking Mamillius to the presence of the king? Why?/0

d. The word ‘she’ in line 23 refers to
I. Paulina
II. Hermione
III. Hermione’s daughter
IV. Emilia

e. Why did Leontes send Hermione to prison?/0

f. Do you think Leontes was sure about the unfaithfulness of his wife? Explain./0

g. In your opinion and given what has happened so far in this tale, why did Leontes decide to kill Mamillius?/0

This one is from the book Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Please answer the questions based on what is stated or implied in the passage. I have attached the text and questions in PDF format too./0

My father’s family name being Pirrip, and my Christian name

Philip, my infant tongue could make of both names nothing

longer or more explicit than Pip. So, I called myself Pip, and

came to be called Pip./0

…/00

As I never saw my father or my mother, and

never saw any likeness of either of them (for their days were

long before the days of photographs), my first fancies regarding

what they were like were unreasonably derived from their

tombstones. The shape of the letters on my father’s, gave me

an odd idea that he was a square, stout, dark man, with curly

black hair. From the character and turn of the inscription,

“Also Georgiana Wife of the Above,” I drew a childish conclusion

that my mother was freckled and sickly. To five little stone

lozenges, each about a foot and a half long, which were arranged

in a neat row beside their grave, and were sacred to

the memory of five little brothers of mine,—who gave up trying

to get a living, exceedingly early in that universal struggle,—I

am indebted for a belief I religiously entertained that they had

all been born on their backs with their hands in their trousers pockets,

and had never taken them out in this state of existence./0

a.Has Pip ever seen his mom’s picture?/0

b.How tall were Pip’s brothers when they passed away?/0

c. How did Pip come up with the idea that his father was strong?/0

c.Can Pip say with certainty that his mom was freckled?/0

d. Write a summary of the passage./0

This is how the Great Expectations continues. I have attached the PDF file which is much easier to read. Thanks

Ours was the marsh country, down by the river, within, as
the river wound, twenty miles of the sea. My first most vivid
and broad impression of the identity of things seems to me to
have been gained on a memorable raw afternoon towards evening.
At such a time I found out for certain that this bleak place
overgrown with nettles was the churchyard; and that Philip
Pirrip, late of this parish, and also Georgiana wife of the above,
were dead and buried; and that Alexander, Bartholomew, Abraham,
Tobias, and Roger, infant children of the aforesaid, were
also dead and buried; and that the dark flat wilderness beyond
the churchyard, intersected with dikes and mounds and gates,
with scattered cattle feeding on it, was the marshes; and that
the low leaden line beyond was the river; and that the distant
savage lair from which the wind was rushing was the sea; and
that the small bundle of shivers growing afraid of it all and beginning
to cry, was Pip./0
“Hold your noise!” cried a terrible voice, as a man started up
from among the graves at the side of the church porch. “Keep
still, you little devil, or I’ll cut your throat!”/0
A fearful man, all in coarse gray, with a great iron on his leg.
A man with no hat, and with broken shoes, and with an old rag
tied round his head. A man who had been soaked in water, and
smothered in mud, and lamed by stones, and cut by flints, and
stung by nettles, and torn by briars; who limped, and shivered,
and glared, and growled; and whose teeth chattered in his
head as he seized me by the chin./0

a. what word would best replace the word ‘country’ in line 1?/0
I.state
II.village
III.land

b. The word ‘it’ in line12 refers to

I.churchyard
II.dikes
III.dark flat wilderness
IV.marshes
V.III and IV

c. Where were the wind blowing from, when Pip met the man in coarse gray?/0

d. Why did the man who Pip met limp?/0

You obviously can and should take notes while listening. It goes without saying that the purpose of the exercise is to help strengthen your listening comprehension and writing skills and that looking up the answers on the Internet could defeat that purpose. /0

I’ll always remember the moment that I met Jack Stanton outside

the library in Harlem, New York City. My first thought was that

he looked strange in Harlem. Stanton is white and most of the

people who live in Harlem are black, like me./0

“You’re the guy that I’ve been hearing about,” he said as he

shook my hand. All politicians are good at shaking hands but Jack

Stanton is the best. I’ve seen him do it two million times now and I

still don’t understand exactly how he does it. It’s actually his left hand

that makes him so good. He might put it on your elbow to show

you that he’s interested in you. He might squeeze your shoulder

with it and tell you a joke. He might just hold your wrist and look

into your eyes. I remember that he squeezed my shoulder that day

in Harlem, and then he was gone, shaking someone else’s hand. I

followed Howard Ferguson into the library where a teacher began

to tell us about her program. She taught adults how to read./0

Howard leaned over and whispered, “I’m glad you’re here, Henry.

Jack really wants you to work for him. He thinks you’re the best.”

I wasn’t sure that I wanted to work for Jack. I was tired of

politics. I had quit working for Senator William Larkin after six

years and I was happy with my job as a college teacher./0

Still, there was something different about Jack Stanton. When

most white politicians arrive in New York City, they go to Wall

Street—that’s where the businessmen work and that’s where the

money is—but Jack Stanton had gone to Harlem instead. That

interested me./0

The students were waiting for their reading lesson to begin.

“This is Governor Jack Stanton,” said the teacher. “He’s now

running for President. Would you like to say a few words,

Governor Stanton?”/0

a. Can the word ‘that’ in line 1 be omitted?/0

b. Can the expression “I’ve been hearing about” in line 5 be changed to “I’ve heard about”? What tense is each expression in?/0

c. In line 19, can we change “had quit working” to “had been quitting work”?/0

d. What did Jack Stanton use his left hand for while handshaking?/0

e. In your opinion, what might have been the motivations behind Jack Stanton’s decision to go to Harlem instead of to Wall Street? /0

hi

b: I think that we can change it to "I`ve heard about" because finally he saw the man and the waiting is over-the first one is present perfect continuous and the second one is present perfect

c: we can`t change it to past perfect continuous because the action of quitting can`t continue and he just quit his job

Hi Javad
b. Correct. Yes, it could be changed to Present Perfect Simple, however, the meaning would be slightly different. "have been hearing about" suggests that the speaker is still hearing about the other guy but "have heard about" does not necessarily suggest that. /0

c. Correct

Thanks

Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe

I was born in the year 1632, in the city of York, of a good family, though not of that country, my father being a foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull. He got a good estate by merchandise, and leaving off his trade, lived afterwards at York, from whence he had married my mother, whose relations were named Robinson, a very good family in that country, and from whom I was called Robinson Kreutznaer; but, by the usual corruption of words in England, we are now called - nay we call ourselves and write our name - Crusoe; and so my companions always called me./0

I had two elder brothers, one of whom was lieutenant-colonel to an English regiment of foot in Flanders, formerly commanded by the famous Colonel Lockhart, and was killed at the battle near Dunkirk against the Spaniards. What became of my second brother I never knew, any more than my father or mother knew what became of me./0

Being the third son of the family and not bred to any trade, my head began to be filled very early with rambling thoughts. My father, who was very ancient, had given me a competent share of learning, as far as house-education and a country free school generally go, and designed me for the law; but I would be satisfied with nothing but going to sea; and my inclination to this led me so strongly against the will, nay, the commands of my father, and against all the entreaties and persuasions of my mother and other friends, that there seemed to be something fatal in that propensity of nature, tending directly to the life of misery which was to befall me./0

My father, a wise and grave man, gave me serious and excellent counsel against what he foresaw was my design. He called me one morning into his chamber, where he was confined by the gout, and expostulated very warmly with me upon this subject. He asked me what reasons, more than a mere wandering inclination, I had for leaving father's house and my native country, where I might be well introduced, and had a prospect of raising my fortune by application and industry, with a life of ease and pleasure. He told me it was men of desperate fortunes on one hand, or of aspiring, superior fortunes on the other, who went abroad upon adventures, to rise by enterprise, and make themselves famous in undertakings of a nature out of the common road; that these things were all either too far above me or too far below me; that mine was the middle state, or what might be called the upper station of low life, which he had found, by long experience, was the best state in the world, the most suited to human happiness, not exposed to the miseries and hardships, the labour and sufferings of the mechanic part of mankind, and not embarrassed with the pride, luxury, ambition, and envy of the upper part of mankind. He told me I might judge of the happiness of this state by this one thing - viz. that this was the state of life which all other people envied; that kings have frequently lamented the miserable consequence of being born to great things, and wished they had been placed in the middle of the two extremes, between the mean and the great; that the wise man gave his testimony to this, as the standard of felicity, when he prayed to have neither poverty nor riches./0

I (affected sincerely, was sincerely affected) with this discourse, and, indeed, (whom, who, which) could be otherwise? and I resolved not (to think, think, thinking) of (go, going, to go) abroad any more, but to settle at home according to my father's (wishes, desire, wants). But alas! a few days (wears , wore , were wearing) it all off; and, in short, to prevent any of my father's further importunities, in a few weeks after I resolved to run quite away from him. However, I did not act quite (so hasty, so hastily, such hasty, such hastily) as the first heat of my resolution (prompting, to prompt, was prompting, prompted); but I took my mother at a time when I thought her a little more pleasant than (usually, usual, ordinary), and (told, tell, was telling) her that my thoughts were so entirely bent upon ( seeing, to see, would see) the world that I should never settle to anything with resolution enough to go through with it, and my father ( has better, had better, must) give me his (contest, consent, permission) than force me to go without it; that I was now eighteen years old, which was too late to go apprentice to a trade or (to clerk, clerk, to clerking) to an attorney; that I was sure if I did I should never serve out my time, but I should certainly (ran, run, was running) away from my master before my time was out, and go to sea; and if she (speaks, spoke, would speak) to my father to let me go one voyage abroad, if I came home again, and did not like it, I (would have gone, would go) no more; and I (promised, promise, would promise), by a double diligence, to recover the time that I had lost. /0

She is a beautiful (pretty) woman
ممنون

I (A. was going B.went C. go) down yesterday to the Piraeus with Glaucon the son of Ariston, that I might (A.offer B. suggest B. give) up my prayers to the goddess; and also because I wanted (A. see B.to see C. seeing D. to seeing) in what manner they would celebrate the festival, which was a new thing. I was delighted with the procession of the (A. habitats B. inhabitants C. inhabitable); but that of the Thracians was equally, if not more, beautiful. /0

When we (A.have finished B. finished C.had finished D.have been finishing) our prayers and viewed the spectacle, we (A.turned B. was turning C. had turned D. A or B)in the direction of the city; and at that instant Polemarchus the son of Cephalus chanced to catch sight of us from a distance as we (A.started B.were starting C. have started D.A or B) on our way home, and told his servant to run and bid us (A. to wait B.wait C.A or B) for him. The servant took hold of me by the cloak behind, and said: Polemarchus desires you to wait. /0

I turned round, and asked him where (A. was his master B. his master was). /0
