FIFA Suspend Iran From International Football FIFA has banned Iran from all international football activity and suspended the Iranian Football Federation (IFF) because of political interference.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter was on the seven-strong Emergency Committee that said in a statement that they had decided to: "suspend the Islamic Republic of Iran Football Federation (IRIFF) from all international activity due to government interference in football matters and violation of Article 17 of the FIFA Statutes."
The Iranian government was as aghast as all residents of the football-mad country at Team Melli’s World Cup performance and responded by firing Mohammad Dadkan, the head of the IFF as well as the members of the board.
The Ministry of Physical Education now runs the federation, an act that is contrary to FIFA rules which state that federations must be independent of politics.
The FIFA statement continued: "The FIFA Emergency Committee took this decision after determining that the IRIFF was not adhering to the principles of the FIFA Statutes regarding the independence of member associations, the independence of the decision-making process of the football governing body in each country and the way in which changes in the leadership of associations are brought about."
A November 15 deadline was given by FIFA and ignored by Iran, who recently clinched qualification for the 2007 Asian Cup.
