When selecting graphics cards for CAD applications, typically a workstation-grade graphics card from either NVIDIA or AMD is recommended. While AutoCAD does not rely heavily on your graphics card, many applications typically run by users who use AutoCAD (such as 3ds Max and some Adobe CS6 products) can benefit much more from a workstation-class GPU. NVIDIA’s newest line of cards is the Quadro K series, offering the K600, K2000, K4000, K5000, and K6000, each increasing in price.

AMD’s newest offering is their FirePro W series, which includes the W5000, W7000, W8000, and W9000, again, each increasing in price. The architecture of these cards is not that different from the graphics cards geared towards video games, but they offer one crucial feature: driver support. NVIDIA and AMD produce drivers for these cards that allow them to take advantage of many CAD applications and vastly outperform their gaming card counterparts. In addition, some CAD software (such as Solidworks) can only be run on workstation-level GPUs.
